Backup – definition

Backup is the process of creating a backup copy of data, which is stored in a secure location to enable recovery in the event of loss, corruption, or failure of the original data. It encompasses various methods, such as full backup, incremental backup, and differential backup, as well as various storage methods, including local physical media and remote cloud servers. Automating this process minimizes the risk of human error, while appropriate security measures, such as encryption, protect data from unauthorized access. Backup is a key element of a data management strategy, enabling rapid recovery in the event of any issues.

How to take care of backup on your computer?

Selecting a backup method:

There are many different backup methods, and the best one for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Here are some popular options:

  • Backing up to a local drive: This is the simplest way to back up, but it's also the least secure. Local drives can fail, so it's important to regularly back up to another storage medium, such as an external drive or a cloud storage service.
  • Backup to an external drive: An external drive is a safe and affordable way to back up your files. You can manually copy files to the external drive or use software to automate the process.
  • Cloud backup: Cloud storage services like Google Drive and Dropbox allow you to back up your data online. This is convenient because it allows you to access your backup from anywhere.
  • System Imaging: System imaging is the process of backing up your entire operating system, including files, applications, and settings. This is useful in the event of a computer failure, as it allows you to restore your system to its pre-disaster state.

Online store backup

Online store backups play a crucial role in ensuring business continuity and protecting data in the event of outages, cyberattacks, or human error. The online store backup process includes:

Regular backup schedules

Online stores should have a defined backup schedule that takes into account the frequency of data changes and the importance of data protection. Standard practices include daily, weekly, and monthly backups.

Data completeness

The backup should include all key elements of the online store, such as the database of products, orders, customers, configurations and multimedia files (photos, videos).

Storage security

Backups should be stored in secure locations away from the online store server to prevent their loss in the event of a hardware failure or attack.

Testing the recovery process (restore)

Regularly testing your backup recovery process is crucial to ensure your online store can be successfully restored if necessary.

Application of automation

Automating the backup process can help ensure regular and accurate backups, minimizing the risk of human error.

Data security

Data stored in a backup should be encrypted to provide additional protection against unauthorized access.

Shopify backup

There are several ways to back up your Shopify Polska store:

Methods offered by Shopify:

  • Automatic backups: Shopify automatically creates backups of your store every 24 hours. These backups include all your store data, such as products, orders, customers, and theme files. You can restore your store from an automatic backup in the event of a hardware or software failure.
  • CSV file backups: You can export CSV files of your Shopify data to create a backup. These CSV files can then be imported into another Shopify store or used to manually restore your data.
  • Duplicating your store: You can duplicate your Shopify Plus store to create a backup. The duplicate copy contains all the data from your original store, but it isn't automatically updated. You can use the duplicate copy to test new features or as a backup in case of a disaster.
